Vitter has faced allegations of involvement with prostitutes before, but had said such charges were false and politically motivated attacks.
In Louisiana yesterday, at least two state Republicans — one a columnist and statehouse candidate and the other a state party official and Vitter rival — were claiming vindication after Vitter’s admission.
In 2002, state GOP official Vincent Bruno charged on talk radio that Vitter had engaged in an extramarital affair.
Bruno told Christopher Tidmore, a political columnist for The Louisiana Weekly and a candidate for the state legislature, that Vitter had consorted for 11 months with a New Orleans prostitute who went by the name Wendy Cortez.
Tidmore told The Hill that other Republicans were aware of the alleged affair, adding that former Gov. Mike Foster (R) had used the information to dissuade Vitter from running for governor in 2001. At the time, Vitter said marital issues kept him from running.
After the allegations surfaced, Vitter attacked Tidmore and Bruno for engaging in “crass Louisiana politics,” adding that the charges were “completely untrue” and “obviously politically motivated.”
Tidmore, who has reported on the story for almost five years, insisted he has no “political ax to grind” with Vitter.
Bruno told The Hill yesterday that Vitter should follow Livingston’s lead and resign for the good of the state party, adding that he thinks more details or more affairs could come to light. He noted that Republican candidates are poised to unseat Blanco this year and mount a strong challenge against Landrieu next year.
“It’s going to be devastating if it comes out,” Bruno said. “He’s got a real problem, and he needs to tend to it. And it doesn’t need to be in the public eye when he does if he cares about his family.”
While talking to The Hill on the phone, Bruno took another call, which he said was from another state party official telling him not to talk to reporters about Vitter.

Despite testimony from four senior Republicans who spoke to Cortez--and direct confirmation from the source--then-Congressman David Vitter accused Tidmore of “crass Louisiana politics, now that I am running for the Senate. I have made that clear that it is all completely untrue...And, it's obviously politically motivated."

Those who attempted to expose hypocrisy and corruption early on were met with threats and disdain. Mr. Vitter’s actions have harmed Louisiana at a time when we could not afford any further loss of influence in Washington.”
“By conducting a series of lies over more than half a decade, Mr. Vitter has irreparably damaged his ability to represent the people of Louisiana at the very time we need integrity and commitment most. We need true ethics, not fake ethical posturing,” Tidmore said. "We need real leadership and moral values, not hypocrisy and intimidation. Louisiana needs new leadership."
Starting with the execution of search on her home and seizure warrants for her bank accounts in October 2006 through her death on May 1, 2008, the 598 page book traces Jeane's final 20 months as the judicial system time and again failed to live up to its promise to insure justice.

Last week, Wendy and I thought it was very important to have some time alone with our children, so that's what we did for a few days. We want to thank the countless friends and fellow citizens who have offered their encouragement and prayers. Those have meant the world to us.
I want to, again, offer my deep, sincere apologies to all those I have let down and disappointed with these actions from my past. I am completely responsible. And I am so very, very sorry. No matter how long ago it was, I know this has hurt the relationship of trust I've enjoyed with so many of you, and that I have a lot of work to do to rebuild that. I will work every day to rebuild that trust.
Wendy and I dealt with this personally several years ago. I confronted it in confession and marriage counseling. I believe I received forgiveness from God. I know I did from Wendy, and we put it behind us.
Since then, I've gotten up every morning, committed to trying to live up to the important values we believe in. If continuing to believe in and acknowledge those values causes some to attack me because of my past failings, well, so be it.
Unfortunately, my admission has encouraged some long-time political enemies and those hoping to profit from the situation to spread falsehoods too, like those New Orleans stories in recent reporting. Those stories are not true.
Now, having said all of this, I'm not going to answer endless questions about it all over again and again and again and again. That might sell newspapers, but it wouldn't serve my family or my constituents well at all because we all have a lot of important work to do for Louisiana.
For my part, I'll be helping finalize a crucial water resources bill to provide much better hurricane and flood protection. I'll be following up on our important defeat of a bad immigration bill by working for good border and workplace security.
D. VITTER: I'll be fighting the complete I-49 and LA-28 and LA-1 and much more.

W. VITTER: To those of you who know me, are you surprised that I have something to say? You know, in most any other marriage, this would have been a private issue between a husband and a wife -- very private. Obviously, it is not here.
Like all marriages, ours is not perfect. None of us are. But we choose to work together as a family. When David and I dealt with this privately years ago, I forgave David. I made the decision to love him and to recommit to our marriage. To forgive is not always the easy choice, but it was and is the right choice for me. David is my best friend.
Last week, some people very sympathetically said to me, "I wouldn't want to be in your shoes right now." I stand before you to tell you very proudly, I am proud to be Wendy Vitter.
That's not to say that last week wasn't incredibly trying and very sad, not for our marriage -- our marriage is stronger every day -- but for our children.
And now I'm going to speak to you as a mother and I hope you will understand. It's been terribly hard to have the media parked on our front lawn and following us every day. And yesterday, the media was camped at our church -- at our home, and at our church every day.
As David returns to work in Washington, we're going to return to our life here. I would ask you very respectfully to let us continue our summer and our lives as we had planned.

He remains here, and avoids telling his side of the story while more and more revelations surface and while hearings, meetings and votes are taking place on Capitol Hill. (The T-P also reported that the D.C. Madam's service called Vitter twice during House roll call votes in which he participated.)

On July 25, 2002, I interviewed Congressman David Vitter on my radio program, Ringside on WTIX 690 AM in New Orleans.
It was a relatively detailed phone interview as he prepared to run for re-election to Congress in the fall of 2002. We had numerous callers in the roughly 20 minute interview, as all sorts of issues were addressed, including some explosive personal topics.

The attached audio includes clips from two callers. One identified himself as the “Flaming Liberal.” He asked Vitter if he would to “sign under the penalty of perjury an affidavit saying you have never had an extramarital affair and you have never known, met or been in the company of one Wendy Cortez.”
In response, Vitter made possibly a Freudian slip when he referred to the “vicious rumors” as “absolutely true.” But, he also clearly said that “they’re lies.”
In the second clip, a caller named “Tom” challenged Vitter to appear on the Ringside program with Republican State Central Committee member Vincent Bruno who initially made the charges about his involvement with Wendy Cortez on my radio program.
Vitter says he would not appear with Bruno, and called him a “thug and a liar.”
Bruno responded later on in the day with a threat of a lawsuit and claimed that he would depose Vitter on the Cortez matter. The threat of legal action prompted a quick response and the next day Vitter sent a certified letter to my house and to Bruno’s house officially apologizing for his comments about Bruno that were made on the program. .
Bruno accepted the apology, so the matter was dropped. However, of course, it resurfaced with the recent news of Vitter’s involvement with the “D.C. Madam,” and now new allegations about his involvement with prostitutes in New Orleans, including one named “Wendy Cortez.”

We have SO MANY Louisiana problems which need addressing, Vitter could help undecided voters --including me, to better ascertain what he intends to do about them!
Whether or not David Vitter dislikes people based upon the color of their skin, his pattern of operation demonstrates that he favors the ELITE class of people --to the unfair and unjust disadvantage of others (probably including immigrants, and not all Blacks --as I feel sure he has his 'tokens').
His pattern of conduct indicates that he thinks he has superior thinking skills to his audience by showing TV ads that talk about what Charle Melancon did or did not do for or with President Obama.
I don't give a flip about hearing Vitter's SAME STUPID OKEY DOKEY talk.
I PREFER to know which of the ISSUES & CONDITIONS affecting every day / non-elite people Vitter intends to address!
I have a grasp on what he does to make things better for the rich and powerful, but they are not the only residents of Louisiana --and many of them are getting old, and some are or will be indicted.
It is aggravating to hear Vitter on the television, Melancon, and others --but especially Vitter because he does it ALL THE TIME, continuing to talk about what is least significant in these crucial economic times!
I could have better respect for Vitter if he had better respect for his listening audience and talked about the issues of Louisiana which desperately need answers since not everyone is interested in pleasuring him or her self, or going hunting, and other gratifying things while being worried about economic conditions.
I AM FAIRLY CERTAIN that I never hear Vitter say anything those things because he does not intend to do anything.
I don't know if I want to vote for Melancon, but the jejune finger pointing at Melancon rather than concrete discussion of the issues wastes my time!
I am trying to give Vitter the benefit of the doubt since I against any politician who engineers judicial benches to be filled with inept and corrupt State as well as Federal judges; and who underhandedly influences appointments of U.S. attorneys!!!
I am further against politicians who pleasure themselves with travel and life's finest while their fellow-citizens endure constant ravages of crime and corruption, with no end in sight; and while their cronies receive slaps on their wrists when their acts of corruption can no longer be whitewashed.
Those are some of the issues for which Louisiana has needed answers for a very long time!
I reiterate my assertion that nearly every social problem in Louisiana can be linked to when controversies require judicial remedies and no other choice except face judges --whom, being friends and giving the best gifts or doing favors for judges ensures good outcomes.
And although there are many intelligent attorneys here, it does not require intelligence nor knowledge of the law, nor even submitting lawful grounds to become granted favorable rulings by certain judges, say for example, Ivan Lemelle and Kurt Engelhardt.
Now, since there seems to be changes in the way comments become posted here at nola.com (particularly for Vitter and his worshipers) here is what I'm posting throughout the Internet:

Now is a good time for election candidates to be talking about solutions for the LOUISIANA CORRUPTION TITANIC rather than each other.
What REALLY is wrong with Louisiana is inept and / or corrupt judicial and U.S. Attorney in positions, that were mainly orchestrated by political placement power!
The justices’ abuses are EASILY PROVABLE by looking at Louisiana real estate / mortgage illegalities, and facilitating court judges.
Thankfully, FORECLOSURE FRAUD has center stage in the national media.
The light will shine brighter in this judicial corruption that has been hiding in plain sight here in Louisiana –and directly linked to Louisiana’ blighted communities \ commercial and residential frauds \ insultingly blatant Bankruptcy lawlessness \ illegal evictions \ unjust homelessness \ disintegrated households \ poverty \ violence \ joblessness \ substance abuse, etc. (Of course, I have approached lawmakers –to no avail– with suggestions, only to incur severe reprisals. And, an option does not exist for me to retreat from doing what I believe is right, nor moving away from loved ones.
Presently –from Judge Thomas Porteous’ impeachment trial, testimonies about the “Louisiana Way” of giving gifts (bribes) and doing ‘favors’ for judges– members of Congress have more than ample information which makes it silly to impeach Porteous and disregard Louisiana in-your-face lawlessness.
Foreclosure fraud has now been explained so clearly, even a child can understand that some people have indeed been illegally tossed from their homes, it will not be hard to detect the unlawful foreclosures that occurred here –especially the illegal foreclosure that unjustly caused people to be Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita exiled from their homes (but their neighbors erroneously blame them for blight).
In fact, a mere GLANCE at Louisiana fraudulent property transactions surrounding Freddie Mac, Wells Fargo, and certain foreclosure mills here –supplies additional reasons for Capitol Hill to probe Louisiana.
**The current congress members who represent Louisiana have done zilch about decades of PRIMA FACIE foreclosure and mortgage fraud!
To reiterate: David Vitter, Charlie Melancon, and other candidates: You have the opportunity to show worthiness of people’s votes by not insulting our intelligence with finger-pointing at each other, but by talking about your plans for addressing the LOUISIANA CORRUPTION TITANIC; it seems headed underwater with all of us on board.

One of the most egregious commentaries on the Vitter scandal is offered by Neil Kavanagh, the one man operation behind The Northside Journal. Kavanagh, falling in step with Lee Fletcher, also seems to believe this is simply an old news story conveniently recycled to embarrass Vitter because of his stance on immigration reform. This, claims Kavanagh, is nothing more than political payback for standing up against, of all people, President Bush AND Ted Kennedy.click link to read more from the daily kingfish.
Kavanagh is right about one thing, though: This isn't the first time Vitter's been accused of adultery. However, Kavanagh takes the position that we should have already known about Vitter's predilection for prostitutes and that because Vitter's been accused of extramarital affairs in the past, he doesn't need to explain anything to the people of Louisiana. And ironically, despite the fact Vitter has now demonstrated that he is not the man of principles and morals he claimed to be, Kavanagh writes:

One would imagine the "conservative principles" admired by Kavanagh would be grounded in a moral code.
